APOPO is now looking for a dedicated and curious researcher to join our team and work on applied behavioral research related to the African Giant Pouched Rat’s (Cricetomys ansorgei) ability to detect fragrance.
Concerning APOPO:
Award-winning international non-profit APOPO uses rat smell detection technology to address societal concerns throughout the world, including teaching rats to detect TB and landmines. The training and research offices of APOPO are located in Morogoro, Tanzania, in collaboration with the Sokoine University of Agriculture.
Regarding the position:
At our headquarters in Morogoro, Tanzania, the selected candidate will work closely with the training and innovation departments of APOPO. Research possibilities pertaining to our continuing landmine and tuberculosis detection efforts are provided by this post.
Principal duties:
- Work using African giant pouched rats to study behavior.
- Investigate and create fresh applications for scent sensing.
- Encourage and work together with APOPO’s TB and landmine detection initiatives.
- Write and submit grant proposals and scientific manuscripts.
- Assist with project finance management and prepare and submit donor reports.
- Oversee and plan the operational and logistical requirements of the projects you are assigned.
- Oversee and lead a group of trainees and junior researchers working with animals.
- Collaborate closely with the Morogoro supervisory and training staff.
- Increase local capability by holding seminars on skill development and providing mentorship.
At the beginning of your deployment, the exact research topics you will work on will be decided upon depending on your personal preferences and strengths as well as organizational needs.
What’s on your profile?
Applicants should have experience performing behavioral research and hold a PhD in a related scientific subject (such as animal behavior psychology, neurology, biology, or anthropology). A strong background in original scientific research and an acute attention to detail are necessary. Applications are particularly welcomed from candidates with past experience studying learning or discriminating behavior in mice, animal training, applicable understanding of animal health and welfare, and/or experience mentoring and supervising.
