Concerning the Role:

For GAIN Tanzania, the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is looking for a Finance Assistant to help with internal control, administration, and financial services. The position will be available for a fixed term contract of two years, contingent on funding availability. Your base of operations will be the GAIN office in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The Finance Assistant will support the GAIN Tanzania office’s successful operations management in compliance with GAIN rules and Tanzania legislation, reporting to the Finance and Administration Manager. All facets of bookkeeping and accounting, procurement support asset tracking and control, efficient processing of financial reports in a timely, accurate, pertinent, and educational way, as well as general administration or operations tasks, will fall within your purview.

Along with supporting the Country Director and local team in upholding positive relationships with external stakeholders like government regulatory bodies, service providers, and consultants, you will also be in charge of making sure that external requirements—such as local laws and regulations, donor, partner, service provider, and vendor contractual obligations—are met.

Principal Accountabilities comprise:

  • Ensuring that every payment request is full and accompanied by the required paperwork.
  • Preparing the necessary supporting documentation, such as travel advances and subcontractor/staff advances, in accordance with GAIN rules and procedures in order to receive payments.
  • Coordinating with regional tax experts to manage the TRA, NSSF, WCF, and other portals and to guarantee adherence to government regulations.
  • Overseeing the office’s petty cash transactions, including the payment and receipt of petty cash, its income, its reconciliation, and the approval of the administrative assistant’s petty cash claims.
  • Making certain that financial transactions are promptly and in compliance with GAIN requirements recorded.
  • Following GAIN rules for receivables and payables will guarantee prompt and accurate vendor payments.
  • Helping to prepare financial reports for all national projects, participating in project QUAD meetings, and forecasting and budgeting.
  • Ensuring that office space and equipment, including furniture and photocopying machines, are properly maintained and tended to in order to give employees the greatest physical environment possible in which to perform their jobs.
  • Conducting due diligence on and assessing possible suppliers, as well as keeping cordial connections with current vendors and suppliers.
  • Supervising all team members’ reporting of travel and expenses, including processing claim forms and obtaining all required permissions for payment.

Concerning You:

The ideal applicant will have previous experience in a similar capacity and in accounting or a related discipline. It would be advantageous for candidates to have prior experience working on projects funded by many donors.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills, as well as written and spoken English competence, are required of the postholder. You should also have a high degree of flexibility, be ready to work periodically outside of usual business hours, and be prepared to travel far from home when necessary.

A nationally recognized degree in accounting and/or finance from a university, or a certificate recognized locally in accounting, taxation, business administration, or a comparable discipline. You’ll have solid working knowledge of accounting programs like Sage and Serenic Navision and be proficient with Microsoft Office.

Based on experience, the starting gross compensation range for this position is between USD 13,764 and USD 15,768 annually.
