United Nations (UN)
United Nations (UN) is a diplomatic and political international organization whose declared goals are to promote international peace and security, foster cordial relations between nations, accomplish international collaboration, and serve as a hub for harmonizing nations’ actions. It is the world’s biggest multinational organization. The UN is headquartered in New York City (in the United States, but with certain extraterritorial privileges), with additional offices in Geneva, Nairobi, Vienna, and The Hague, where the International Court of Justice is located at the Peace Palace. United Nations Tanzania Vacancies June 2024.
The United Nations was founded after World War II to prevent future world wars, succeeding the League of Nations, which was deemed useless. On April 25, 1945, 50 nations convened in San Francisco, California, for a summit and began drafting the UN Charter, which was adopted on June 25, 1945. The charter became effective on October 24, 1945, when the UN commenced operations. The UN’s charter defines its aims as maintaining international peace and security, defending human rights, providing humanitarian relief, promoting sustainable development, and enforcing international law. The United Nations had 51 member states when it was founded; by 2023, it had 193, accounting for nearly all of the world’s sovereign governments.
