United Nations (UN)

The stated goals of the United Nations (UN), a diplomatic and political international organization, are to uphold world peace and security, foster goodwill among nations, accomplish international collaboration, and operate as a hub for coordinating national policies. It is the biggest multinational organization in the world. In addition to its headquarters in New York City (in the United States, but with some extraterritorial rights), the United Nations also maintains offices in Geneva, Nairobi, Vienna, and The Hague, where the Peace Palace serves as the home of the International Court of Justice.

Following World War II, the UN replaced the League of Nations, which was deemed ineffectual, with the goal of averting future global conflicts. 50 countries gathered for a summit in San Francisco, California, on April 25, 1945, and began drafting the UN Charter, which was ratified on June 25 of the same year. When the UN started operations on October 24, 1945, the charter went into effect. According to its charter, the UN’s goals are to enforce international law, promote sustainable development, deliver humanitarian aid, protect human rights, and ensure world peace and security. The United Nations now has 193 member nations, or nearly all of the world’s sovereign states, compared to its founding’s 51.
