Driven by a core strategic mandate for research, training, and services, the Institute’s work has expanded to include biological and ecological sciences, intervention studies, health-systems research, service delivery, and policy translation.
Summary of position:
Ifakara Health Institute is looking for a skilled Accounts Officer Intern to join the PMI Shinda (Defeat) Malaria project. The Accounts Officer will support the project’s finance and accounting responsibilities. This position entails keeping accurate financial records, assisting with asset register updates, and assuring compliance with corporate policies and external regulations.
Ifakara Health Institute’s five-year (August 2022–August 2027) PMI Shinda (Defeat) Malaria Activity program helps the Government of Tanzania (GOT) lessen the impact of malaria and work toward its eradication. The US President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) are grateful for the support of the American people in making the Activity possible.
The PMI Shinda (Defeat) Malaria project collaborates with the GOT to lessen the impact of malaria and advance the long-term objective of eliminating the disease, all the while fulfilling USAID’s plan to assist local institutions in building their institutional capacity. Shinda Malaria will support Tanzanian partners in expanding and successfully implementing malaria programs while also responding to the urgent healthcare needs of populations at-risk for malaria, particularly susceptible pregnant women and children under five.
The PMI Shinda (Defeat) Malaria project’s main goals are to support facility- and community-based malaria initiatives in each of the Kagera region’s councils and to contribute to the National Malaria Control Programme’s (NMCP) national malaria priorities.
The Responsibilities and Duties:
- Help with the system’s payment processing and inspection.
- Retain and preserve project transaction records.
- Help maintain the assets record up to date.
- Help with the compilation of VAT claims for Ministry of Health and donor approval, as well as their submission to TRA for reimbursement.
- Help with the monthly bank reconciliation process.
- Assist the Grants unit with administrative duties.
- Keep track of your grants and finance files to make sure you have all the required paperwork.
- Examine the spending reports and fund reconciliations of subgrantees in collaboration with the Senior Grants & Finance Officer.
- Help collect the required data and ensure that subgrantees’ expenditures are accurate and compliant.
- Perform other tasks as directed by the Senior Grants & Finance Officer and Project Accountant.
Experience and Qualifications:
- It is necessary to have a recent college degree (undergraduate) in accounting/finance, business commerce, or a similar field.
- Comprehension and familiarity with accounting terms, theories, and practices.
- Familiarity with and comprehension of projects funded by donors.
Proficiency and aptitude/ Competencies and Skills:
- Expertise with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and familiarity with a range of commercial accounting software packages.
- Strong ability to prioritize tasks and maintain structure.
- Strong interpersonal and written communication abilities in both written and spoken English are essential.
- Self-management—that is, drive, ability to handle pressure, and flexibility—is essential.
