The Chemonics International Inc, a U.S.-based international development consulting organization, is looking for 14 Clinical Nutritionist Interns for the USAID/Tanzania Lishe (Nutrition) Project. The five-year initiative aims to develop health and food market systems in Tanzania’s targeted regions, encouraging the adoption of optimal nutrition-related behaviors across a diverse range of stakeholders. We are looking for people who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of others throughout the world.

Candidates must have recently graduated from an accredited college with a degree in clinical nutrition, dietetics, human nutrition, or another relevant subject. Clinical nutritionist interns will spend a year working in regional or district health facilities, obtaining vital expertise in patient care and treatment, as well as nutrition education and promotional efforts. Ideal candidates will be required to effectively enhance the quality delivery of nutrition interventions in health care institutions. In order to increase healthcare and nutrition education in the five regions of the project—Njombe, Songwe, Rukwa, Katavi, and Kigoma—the interns will be placed strategically in each of these areas. The interns’ supervisors in each region will be the nutrition and health systems coordinators.

The Key Responsibilities:

  • Offer technical support for the execution and oversight of hospital-based quality improvement initiatives, including the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative, maternity, baby, young child, and adolescent nutrition, and quality improvement, in the approved healthcare institutions.
  • Give medical facilities technical assistance for setting up nutrition units or corners, including ECCD.
  • Nutritional Assessment: Learn how to do thorough nutritional evaluations, such as collecting food histories, analyzing dietary consumption, evaluating anthropometric measurements, and interpreting laboratory findings.
  • Initiatives for Quality Improvement: Work together with regional project coordinators to support hospital-based clinical nutrition quality improvement programs at their medical institutions.
  • Documentation: Keep accurate and timely records of patient assessments, interventions, and progress notes in compliance with facility policies and procedures.
  • Patient Nutrition Education: Offer individual and group nutrition education sessions to clients, concentrating on newborn, mother, and young child eating, as well as promoting the 10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding.
  • Management of Acute Nutrition (MAM): Plan therapeutic diets for MAM clients in accordance with specified criteria, as well as treat MAM in children under the age of five.
  • Project Reporting: Improve overall project reporting (monthly, quarterly, and yearly) by regularly updating project leaders on success stories, problems, and significant lessons learned from implementing hospital-based quality improvement programs in their regions.
  • Professional Development: Attend educational seminars, workshops, and conferences to further your knowledge and abilities in clinical nutrition and dietetics.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Effectively communicate with members of the healthcare team, such as physicians, nurses, therapists, and other allied health professionals, to coordinate patient care and improve outcomes.
  • Monitoring and evaluation: Actively participate in project surveys, collecting data, analyzing it, and developing conclusions and recommendations to improve clinical nutritional services in health care.
  • Research and Evidence-based Practice: Stay current on nutrition research and evidence-based practice standards, and incorporate new results into patient care as needed.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor’s degree in clinical nutrition, dietetics, human nutrition, or a similar field from a recognized university.
  • Ability to operate independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team setting.
  • Proven dedication to professional development in the field of clinical nutrition and dietetics.
