Leading African research institution Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) has a proven track record of creating, evaluating, and verifying health-related technologies. The Institute’s work today covers a wide range, including biological and ecological sciences, intervention studies, health-systems research, service delivery, and policy translation. It is driven by a core strategic mandate for research, training, and services.
Summary of Position:
The Ifakara Health Institute is looking for a skilled and knowledgeable data officer. The Kilombero and Ulanga Antiretroviral Cohort (KIULARCO), the National AIDS Control Program, and other research databases within the Chronic Diseases Clinic of Ifakara (CDCI)/Heart and Lung Clinic will be the sources of data for the Data Officer.
The Duties and responsibilities:
- To be responsible for managing data in accordance with KIULARCO and the National AIDS Control Program, as well as other CDCI/Heart and Lung Clinic research databases.
- To work on quality control/assurance for KIULARCO data and other research databases at the CDCI and Heart and Lung Clinic.
- To participate in data processing and reporting for various research projects at KIULARCO as assigned by Senior Project Statisticians.
- To management of KIULARCO, NACP, and other CDCI research databases, as well as collaborative projects (supervision of correct data entry by other team members, quality control, and data extraction), in close coordination with the Data Manager.
- To be responsible for overseeing the resolution of KIULARCO and/or NACP data inquiries.
- To assist ongoing KIULARCO studies with data analysis, interpretation, and reporting, as well as contribute to the creation of publications for KIULARCO and partner initiatives.
- To prepare quarterly HIV care and ART reports for district and national authorities, as well as monthly and annual KIULARCO reports.
- To assist the Heart and Lung Clinic in maintaining a cohort of patients with chronic heart and lung disorders.
- To actively participate in journal clubs and help with quality control sessions.
- The team will be trained on statistical principles and data management through presentations and individual consultations.
- To attend and/or conduct all required CDCI and IHI meetings.
- To attend seminars, meetings, workshops, training, conferences, or activities organized by the Tanzanian government, MOH, regional, district, and key implementing partners as needed.
Help with organizing, arranging, and supporting research projects that IHI and other partners are organizing.
Complete any extra duties as directed by the project statisticians, director of St. Francis Referral Hospital (SFRH), site director of IHI, or project leader.
Job Qualifications and Experience:
- A Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science, or Information Systems.
- Knowledge of database administration technologies, such as ODK, OpenMRS, REDCap, and SQL.
- Programming language, beginner to intermediate.
- Familiarity with data governance, including knowledge of data security, privacy, and quality requirements.
- Prior experience of at least two years in data management.
- Prior work experience or volunteer work at a research institution is a bonus.

- Capacity to operate both individually and in a team with little oversight.
- Proficient in both written and spoken communication.
