The UBONGO is Africa’s leading developer of children’s educational content. As a non-profit social venture, we develop engaging, localized, and multi-platform educational content to help children learn and use their knowledge to better their lives. Ubongo serves nearly 42 million children in Africa with accessible technologies such as television, radio, and mobile phones. Our shows Ubongo Kids and Akili and Me are being broadcast in 23 African nations in Swahili, English, French, Kinyarwanda, Kikuyu, Luo, Yoruba, Hausa, Chichewa, and Juba Arabic.

The Job Description: We are looking for a Development Manager (Maternity Cover) to join our small but powerful Development and Communications team.

 

You’ll be joining a team of 70+ Ubongoers across 8 countries and counting, with the ambitious goal of engaging 100 million children in Africa by 2028. Working with Ubongo will challenge and thrill you with a variety of tasks and activities, as well as the ability to positively touch the lives of millions of children on a daily basis.

We’re searching for a dynamic, innovative, and adaptable Development Manager (Maternity Cover) to help with our fundraising efforts. You will collaborate closely with our Director of Communications and Development to help us raise funds from foundations, family foundations, government grantmakers, and individuals throughout the world who are interested in supporting our work.

 

We are searching for an experienced fundraising professional who will collaborate with our team to identify and apply for grant possibilities, as well as develop and implement a strategy and content for creating relationships with potential sponsors. A successful candidate will be an excellent storyteller and relationship builder, with a strong passion for the work we undertake.

The candidates should plan on spending 50% of their time drafting, editing, and submitting challenge grants, award applications, proposals, and concept notes, 20% prospecting funding opportunities and attending team meetings, and 30% prospecting and cultivating relationships with potential funders.

 

 

The responsibilities:

Create high-quality funding applications:

  • To write and submit nine engaging applications and proposals for $9 million in new funding, challenge grants, and renewals.
  • To continue to work to secure $1.8 million in pledged funds by June 2025.

 

 

The Strategic fundraising outreach:

  • To coordinate meetings and outreach to increase Ubongo’s visibility and participation in the CIES and Skoll World Forums.
  • To push for six strategic introductions and meetings with possible sponsors by applying targeted cultivation tactics by June 2025.

 

 

The Funder Communication and Updates:

  • To prepare and distribute four monthly and two quarterly fundraising updates by June 2025.
  • Create complete donor memos for all possible funder conversations, ensuring that colleagues have all necessary information for successful engagement.

 

 

The Funder Engagement and Events:

  • To continue to assist the Grants Manager in developing and implementing two impactful funder webinars by June 2025.

 

 

The Database and document management:

  • Keep up-to-date and accurate records of all funding applications, communications, and transactions in the organization’s database.

 

 

The Requirements: Knowledge, Experience, and Qualifications Essentials:

  • More than three (3+) years of experience fundraising or grant writing for a non-profit organization or social entrepreneurship.
  • The excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Proven grantwriting and narrative abilities.
  • The experience with outreach and/or network development roles.
  • The ability to synthesize research and write persuasive literature reviews.
  • A bachelor’s degree, preferably in English literature, creative writing, education, research, marketing, communications, non-profit management, business, or a related discipline.
  • The proven experience in grant writing, fundraising, marketing, corporate communications, content development, writing, and project management.
  • He/ She must be able to provide at least two professional references.
  • Must enjoy spending time with children.
  • Must possess the capacity to work independently and think on your feet.
  • Be able (willing) to wear multiple hats.

  • Enjoys developing relationships and meeting new people.
  • Excellent storytelling abilities, which shine through in public speaking and writing. We tell powerful stories, and you must be able to effectively represent our brand in public.
