The Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is Africa’s foremost research organization, having a track record of inventing, testing, and verifying health-related technologies. Driven by a core strategic mandate for research, training, and services, the Institute’s work has expanded to include biological and ecological sciences, intervention studies, health-systems research, service delivery, and policy translation.
The Position Summary:
The Ifakara Health Institute is looking for a skilled driver. This position’s major role is to operate office cars safely, give excellent customer service on assigned routes, and ensure that the vehicle conforms with legislation consistent with the organization’s requirements.
The Duties and responsibilities:
- To drive office cars and carry approved personnel.
- Vehicles should be inspected before to and after each journey, with any mechanical or safety issues documented and reported.
- To interact courteously with all customers (internal and external), ensuring professional and timely service.
- To assist with loading and unloading supplies from cars.
- To collect and deliver mail and other messages to and from the post office, government agencies, and other organizations.
- To maintain the allocated car by checking the oil, water, battery, brakes, and tires; performing minor repairs; arranging for more repairs; and keeping the vehicle clean.
- Record all trips, daily miles, fuel usage, oil changes, and other pertinent vehicle information.
- In the event of a collision, follow IHI laws and policies, as well as traffic regulations.
- Perform banking, financial, and other outdoor messenger responsibilities as required.
- To support general office chores such as photocopying, faxing, scanning, assisting receptionists, processing incoming/outgoing calls, screening guests, and maintaining storerooms.
The Qualifications and Experience:
- Minimum of a ‘O’ level pass.
- Valid driver’s license for categories B, C, D, and E.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a dynamic office setting, preferably for an NGO.
- Be fluent in English, both written and spoken, and have an excellent command of Kiswahili.
The Skills and competencies:
- A customer service-oriented, with a strong drive to meet and above expectations.
- The Professional, courteous, and trustworthy, but yet taking pride in one’s work.
- Excellent time management abilities, ensuring that tasks are accomplished safely and efficiently.
- Capable of working in all weather situations and doing physical duties such as repetitive lifting, pushing, tugging, and climbing.
- The excellent oral and written communication abilities.
- Capable of accurately reading and interpreting maps.
