Job Title: Education Assistant Coordinator

Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS)

 

JRS is an international Catholic institution that provides specialised support to refugees and other forcibly displaced individuals. Our aim is to accompany, serve and protect the rights of refugees and other forcibly displaced persons. This goal is built on a confidence in God present in human history, even at its most tragic periods.

JRS is currently working in the Tanzania refugee camps located in Kigoma region, with three departments: one for education, another one for psychosocial assistance and the last one for reconciliation. Under its inclusive education projects, JRS is looking for an Education Assistant Coordinator with knowledge in inclusive education who would be based in Kigoma region (Kibondo or Kasulu).

 

Description of Roles and responsibilities:

  • Under the guidance of the Education Coordinator, the Assistant is responsible for formal education activities in the refugee camps and host community and must have a consistent presence in the implementation zone.
  • Responsible for school data entering and database update.
  • Conducting regular follow-up on execution of education activities, including pedagogical follow-up of teachers and students, especially those with disabilities.
  • Maintaining an updated database of JRS materials and equipment in the refugee camp, undertaking regular follow-up of these materials and equipment to ensure they are adequately maintained.
  • Support school directors and their helpers with any administrative work linked to JRS education activities.
  • Collaborate in the preparation of teacher, student and parent training, with a focus on inclusive education.
  • Implement activities with youth groups for gender, environmental or other related problems.
  • Conduct capacity building meetings to teachers under the direction of the education coordinator.
  • Prepare and conduct distribution of education materials.
  • Collaborate in the preparation and distribution of assistive devices for children with impairments.
  • Liaise with incentive workers in the camps and the education coordinator for the identification of beneficiaries.
  • Organize regular meetings with school administrators, their assistants, and parents of kids.
  • Organize education awareness campaigns.
  • Student follow-up in and out of school with specific focus to girls and kids with special needs.
  • As requested by the education coordinator, work together on activity reports and provide all data to them for project reporting.
  • Gathering, scanning, and giving to the education coordinator all verification tools.
  • Cooperation in the creation of any administrative document pertaining to the execution of educational activities.
  • Support the use of any technology in the schools located in the refugee camp as needed.
  • In the event that enrollment, assessments, or other duties requiring data collection call for it, coordinate with the education coordinator and data collectors to ensure accurate and precise data gathering.
  • When asked to represent JRS in meetings with other stakeholders or at the camp level, carry out the education coordinator’s assignment.
  • Carry out additional responsibilities as they are amiably agreed upon and appropriately assigned by the project director.

 

Profile Sought:

  • An inclusive education bachelor’s degree.
  • Three years or more of professional experience working in the inclusive education field.
  • A minimum of two years’ worth of experience working professionally for an international organization or NGO.
  • Work experience in Tanzanian refugee camps will be given preference.
  • Strong background and expertise in child safety and gender-responsive programming.
  • Expertise in observation and assessment.
  • Strong command of both written and spoken Swahili and English.
  • Kirundi and French language proficiency will be highly valued.
  • Strong familiarity with standard applications (Word, Excel, Power Point).
  • Capacity to operate both independently and together with others.
  • Capacity to function as a team.
  • Flexibility and resilience under duress.
  • Patience as well as an open mind.
  • Readiness to live in the Kigoma region (Kasulu or Kibondo).
  • Be accessible as soon as you can.
