Job Title: External Relationship Manager – Ports and Terminals

The External Relationship Manager will be in charge of maintaining and strengthening ties between DP World and important government agencies, regulatory bodies, and clients. The role will entail coordinating with government parties to guarantee regulatory compliance, resolving customer needs, and ensuring seamless port operations. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving abilities, as well as a thorough understanding of Tanzania’s port operations and government processes.

The Key Performance Areas:

  • Serve as the principal point of contact between DP World and other port stakeholders, including the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), Tanzania Shipping Agency (TASAC), Ministry of Transport and Communications, and other regulatory authorities.
  • Collaborate with government officials to ensure that local laws, regulations, and port operations policies are followed.
  • Facilitate government clearances and permits for port operations, infrastructure construction, and expansion.
  • Monitor policy changes, laws, and industry trends to give management timely guidance.
  • Represent DP World at meetings, conferences, and talks with government officials.
  • Create and maintain a strong network of government stakeholders to foster beneficial working relationships.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Commercial to develop and maintain strong relationships with major customers such as shipping firms, freight forwarders, and importers/exporters who use the port.
  • Collaborate with the commercial team to identify and address customers’ logistical and operational requirements.
  • Coordinate with the operations and logistics teams to ensure that all government and customer requirements are in line with DP World’s service offerings and operational capabilities.
  • Assist in overcoming operational bottlenecks and ensuring seamless cooperation between port and government entities during the customs clearance procedure.
  • Ensure that all permissions, licenses, and certificates required for port operations are up to date.
  • Proactively identify risks associated with government relations and customer operations, including regulatory changes that may have an impact on port activities.
  • Work closely with the compliance team to ensure that all safety, environmental, and legal standards are met.
  • Manages DP World’s communications with major media stakeholders.
  • Oversees external/public communications, including news and updates, in order to promote DP World’s public image and connectivity with external stakeholders.
  • Keeps up with industry or national news and identifies communication need.
  • Analyzes data from external communications and makes informed decisions on communication strategy.
  • Create regular reports on interactions with government agencies, regulatory updates, and customer feedback.
  • Communicate effectively with internal teams and high management about applicable government policies and customer concerns.
  • Ensure that critical information is communicated to relevant stakeholders on a timely basis.

 

The required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public relations, political science, or a closely related discipline.
  • A master’s degree provides an advantage.

 

 

Experience and Skills Required:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in government relations, public relations, or customer service positions, ideally in the logistics, maritime, or port operations industries.
  • Proven track record of successful interactions with government agencies and managing customer relationships.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Excellent negotiating and problem-solving skills.
  • Deep awareness of Tanzania’s regulatory landscape.
  • Capability to manage various stakeholders while working in a dynamic, fast-paced setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and customer relationship management (CRM) applications.
  • A thorough understanding of port and maritime industry operations.
  • The ability to establish trust and sustain strong connections with both government officials and customers.
  • Results-oriented, with an emphasis on service quality.
  • The ability to handle sensitive material discreetly and professionally.
  • Strategic thinker with keen attention to detail and the capacity to predict problems.
