Responsibilities and Duties:
Organizational Design and Reporting Applications for legal internships are being accepted by the Arusha Branch of the Office of the Prosecutor (“OTP”) of the United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (“Mechanism”) in Arusha, Tanzania. The internships will begin on May 15, 2024, and run up to a maximum of six months after that. In your cover letter, please specify the duration of your desired internship. In order to fulfill the essential duties of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (“ICTR”) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (“ICTY”) after their respective mandates have expired, the Security Council of the United Nations established the Mechanism in 2010. The Mechanism works to preserve the legacy of these two groundbreaking international criminal tribunals and to represent best practices in the field of international criminal justice in the course of its ad hoc and continuing functions. The Office of the Prosecutor of the Mechanism (OTP) offers legal, judicial, institutional, diplomatic, and administrative support to the Prosecutor of the Mechanism in carrying out his mandated duties. The OTP operates out of both branches of the Mechanism, which are situated in The Hague, The Netherlands, and Arusha, Tanzania. Selected applicants will report to and be supervised by legal officers at the OTP of the Arusha Branch. The Mechanism offers full-time, unpaid internships.
The office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Friday. Accountabilities Legal interns will support OTP counsel in a variety of ways under the direction of Senior Legal Officers and Legal Officers in the OTP, Arusha branch. Interns can be involved in the following activities:
(i) conducting in-depth legal and factual research;
(ii) helping to draft memoranda on matters pertaining to international humanitarian law and international and comparative criminal law and procedure;
(iii) working on a variety of issues related to the Mechanism’s ongoing operations, such as review and contempt investigations and proceedings, as well as other post-conviction litigation;
(iv) helping with any tasks related to fugitive tracking;
(v) analyzing and summarizing witness testimony/evidence;
(vi) helping to provide services to national authorities.
(vii) carrying out duties as needed, such as citation checking and gathering and organizing legal materials.
Requirements and unique abilities:
Candidates must fulfill one of the following requirements at the time of application:
(a) Have finished or be enrolled in the last year of a first-year university degree program in a legal discipline, with a minimum bachelor’s degree or its equivalent.
(b) Have finished or be enrolled in a graduate program leading to a second university degree (Master’s degree) or its equivalent. Candidates need to know how to use standard software on a computer. To apply for the UN Internship Program, you do not need to have any prior employment experience.
During your internship, the UN should profit from your education, training, and advanced coursework. Please provide examples to demonstrate how you achieve this requirement. Candidates must have either finished a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. program, be enrolled in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or be in the program for a Master’s or Ph.D. Please specify which qualification you are applying for and include documentation of it. Please be aware that you will eventually need to present an official certificate.
Language:
The Mechanism may operate in both French and English. It is necessary to speak and write English fluently. Proficiency in French is preferred.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
