Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI)

The Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI) is a parastatal agency under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism that was created in 1980 by Act No. 4 of the Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania (CAP 260 R.E. 2021). TAWIRI has a national mission to undertake and coordinate wildlife research, as well as to share scientific knowledge with stakeholders, in order to promote sustainable biodiversity conservation. To conduct and promote high-quality wildlife research, the Institute must attract and maintain highly motivated scientists and support staff. Currently, the Institute consists of five Wildlife Research Centers: Western, Kingupira, Njiro, Southern Highlands, and Serengeti.

The overall goal (purpose) of TAWIRI is to collect and disseminate timely and high-quality scientific information to help guide the country’s wildlife resource management and exploitation. As a result, the Institute has a mandatory role in advising the government, management authorities, and the general public on the best ways to conserve wildlife resources using research findings. The Institute’s research mandate also includes the promotion and facilitation of Tanzanian wildlife science training. According to its charter, TAWIRI’s key functions include coordinating and managing all wildlife research in the country.
