Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA)

The Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA) is an Executive Agency of the President’s Office, Regional Administration, and Local Government (PO-RALG) that was established under Section 3 (1) of the Executive Agencies Act (Cap. 245) by Order published in Government Notice No.211 dated May 12, 2017 and inaugurated on July 2, 2017. The Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA) is in charge of supervising the development, repair, maintenance, axle load regulation, environmental, and road reserve management of Tanzania’s rural and urban road networks for socioeconomic development. The Prime Minister urged TARURA to reject the widespread bribery involved in bidding processes, particularly for road projects.

“Only competent contractors should be hired to execute road projects through competitive bidding,” the nation’s leader stated. He also urged TARURA to address the ineffective management of construction contracts between contractors and the Authority in road projects, emphasizing transparency in all public works contracts. The new agency is critical to increasing agricultural productivity by allowing crop shipment to market. It will also be critical to our economic prosperity.
