The NMB Bank Plc is one of Tanzania’s largest commercial banks, offering financial services to individuals, small to medium-sized corporations, government agencies, large businesses, and farm finance. NMB Bank was created under the National Microfinance Bank Limited Incorporation Act of 1997, following the dissolution of the former National Bank of Commerce by an Act of Parliament. Three new organizations were established at the time: (a) NBC Holdings Limited, (b) National Bank of Commerce (1997) Limited, and (c) National Microfinance Bank Limited.

The bank is present in every district of Tanzania and has 226 branches, over 700 ATMs, and over 9,000 Agents (Wakala) nationwide. NMB has more than 3,400 employees and more than 4 million consumers. It is listed on the Dar Es Salaam Stock Exchange, and the government of Tanzania owns 31.8% of its shares, making it the largest stakeholder, followed by strategic partner Arise B.V. with 34.9%. NMB was chosen as the “Best Bank in Tanzania” by Euromoney Awards for Excellence for eight consecutive years, from 2013 to 2020. According to Global Finance Magazine, the bank is Tanzania’s Safest Bank for 2020.
