NMB Bank Plc is one of Tanzania’s largest commercial banks, offering financial services to individuals, small to medium-sized corporations, government agencies, large businesses, and farm finance. NMB Bank was created under the National Microfinance Bank Limited Incorporation Act of 1997, following the dissolution of the former National Bank of Commerce by an Act of Parliament. Three new organizations were established at the time: (a) NBC Holdings Limited, (b) National Bank of Commerce (1997) Limited, and (c) National Microfinance Bank Limited.

The bank operates 226 branches, over 9,000 Agents (Wakala), and over 700 ATMs throughout Tanzania, with representation in all districts. NMB has more than 4 million consumers and over 3,400 employees. It is listed on the Dar Es Salaam Stock Exchange, and its major shareholders are strategic partners Arise B.V (34.9%) and the Government of Tanzania (31.8%). From 2013 to 2020, Euromoney Awards for Excellence named NMB the “Best Bank in Tanzania” for the eighth consecutive year. Global Finance Magazine rated the bank as Tanzania’s Safest Bank for 2020.
