The Benjamin Mkapa Hospital (BMH) was founded under Government Notice No. 453 of 2015, which was gazetted by the government on October 16, 2015, following its inauguration on October 13, 2015. The establishment of this hospital stems from Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete’s objective, in his fourth term as President of the United Republic of Tanzania, to have a high-tech and sophisticated diagnostic treatment facility in Tanzania by 2015, with the goal of lowering the government burden associated with referring patients abroad. The hospital has 400 beds and serves both inpatients and outpatients from inside and outside of the country.
