Bagamoyo Sugar Limited (BSL)
The green field project of Bagamoyo Sugar Ltd (Bagamoyo Sugar), a Bakhresa Group unit, was founded on December 1, 2016, at the request of the Tanzanian government, to cultivate sugar cane on the nucleus estate and produce sugar in Makurunge, Bagamoyo District. The project’s principal goal is to reduce dependence on sugar imports and achieve self-sufficiency while also producing surplus sugar for export. This is the first time a project of this size has been implemented in Tanzania. Thyssenkrupp India Pvt Ltd, a German business established in India, supplies the sugar factory, and Netafim, an Israeli company, provides irrigation support utilizing cutting-edge digital farm technology.
The project is being implemented on schedule, with commercial production expected to begin in mid-2022. Phase 1 of the project is expected to produce around 30,000 tons of sugar. According to the Group’s objective of aiding the Tanzanian community, this initiative in the village of Makurunge is creating job opportunities for thousands of unemployed youth.
