The government of Tanzania established the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) as the country’s national standards body as part of its efforts to fortify the infrastructure that supports the industrial and commerce sectors throughout the economy. The National Standards Institute was the name given to the Bureau by Parliamentary Act No. 3 of 1975, which formed it. It started operations on April 16, 1976. Act No. 1 of 1977 subsequently changed its name to Tanzania Bureau of Standards.

The Standards Act No. 2 of 2009 took its place on March 20, 2009, after the Standards Act No. 3 of 1975 was repealed. TBS was specifically tasked with implementing quality control procedures for products of all kinds and fostering industry and commercial uniformity.
