National Bank of Commerce (Tanzania) Limited, sometimes known as NBC (Tanzania), is a Tanzanian commercial bank. It is one of the commercial banks authorized by the Bank of Tanzania, the country’s central bank and national banking regulator. In August 2019, the bank was fined TSh 1 billion (US$435,000) for failing to create a data center in the East African nation.
The Bank’s beginnings date back to 1967, when the Tanzanian government nationalized all financial organizations, including banks. In 1991, the banking industry was changed, and six years later, in 1997, the institution then known as National Bank of Commerce was divided into three different entities: NBC Holding Corporation, National Microfinance Bank (NMB), and NBC (1997) Limited. Absa Group Limited, a South African financial services company, purchased the bulk of NBC stock in 2000.The Tanzanian government retained a 30% stake, while the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a World Bank Group member, acquired a 15% stake in the bank. The new company was named as NBC Limited.
