The Position Summary:
The Open Flexure Microscope project intends to compare the diagnostic accuracy of a unique digital microscope, the open flexure microscope, against a manual light microscope for malaria diagnosis. The Lab Technician will be responsible for assisting experienced microscopists at the Bagamoyo research laboratory with blood smear preparation for both manual and digital microscopy. The intern will also be in charge of maintaining the digital microscope, scanning smear images, and storing them on a long-term storage server.
The Duties and responsibilities:
- To assist skilled microscopists in the preparation and reading of malaria blood slides.
- To help build Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the digital microscope.
- The blood slide imaging with a digital microscope and data storage.
- Support in the archiving and storage of blood smear pictures.
- To coordinate blood slide reading findings from both digital and manual microscopes. To keep digital microscopes in good condition.
The Qualifications and Experience:
- A diploma in Medical Laboratory Science.
The Skills and competencies:
- The knowledge of malaria microscopy using an optical microscope.
- The basic computing expertise.
- Knowing how to build a digital microscope will be advantageous.
