Leading African research institution Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) has a proven track record of creating, evaluating, and verifying health-related technologies. The Institute’s work today covers a wide range, including biological and ecological sciences, intervention studies, health-systems research, service delivery, and policy translation. It is driven by a core strategic mandate for research, training, and services.
Summary of Position:
Ifakara Health Institute is looking for a Laboratory Technologist with experience and qualifications. The lab technologist will carry out laboratory testing necessary for the care of patients with HIV and/or TB, including co-morbidities, under the direction of the laboratory manager. In addition, the position entails working with the hospital, the government, and the Kilombero and Ulanga Antiretroviral Cohort (KIULARCO) research platform in Ifakara to provide enhanced services.
Obligations and Liabilities:
- Conduct laboratory tests in accordance with KIULARCO protocol and other assays in accordance with research protocols on blood samples, biological fluids, and other materials (e.g., whole blood picture, chemistry, CD4, viral load, resistance testing, crag screening, culture, and others).
- Maintain and check the quality of the laboratory apparatus.
- Carry out laboratory test quality assurance and control procedures.
- Information coming into the computer.
- Samples are frozen for biobanking and biobank organization.
- As needed, impart knowledge to team members or provide training.
- Engage in pertinent national and international conferences, meetings, and networks.
- Create research initiatives, carry out investigations, and compose written works.
- Participate in research conducted by KIULARCO and other IHI initiatives started by the Chronic Disease Clinic of Ifakara (CDCI).
- Establish SOPs for managing quality control and laboratory testing.
- Attend all required meetings, including the Tuesday sessions at CDCI and other IHI/hospital meetings based on their line of work.
- Help in organizing, arranging, and supporting the research projects that IHI and its partners host.
- When directed by the Project Leader or the Director of St. Francis Referral Hospital, complete any additional tasks.
Experience and Qualifications:
- Degree in zoology, medical laboratory science, or a similar field.
- Experience dealing with patients who have HIV/TB.
Proficiencies and Abilities:
- Proficiency in both Swahili and English.
- Curiosity about HIV/TB.
- Strong drive to conduct research.
- Outstanding people skills and a cooperative leadership approach.
- Able to establish and maintain connections with more senior experts.
- Work ethic that is evident and approached with professionalism.
- Focused on outcomes.
