Concerning Geita Gold Mining Ltd

With a single operation in the Geita Region, Geita Gold Mining Ltd. (GGML) is the top gold producer in Tanzania. The business is a division of AngloGold Ashanti, a global producer of gold with its main office located in Denver, USA. Over 10 nations on four continents are home to AGA’s operations. The mine is located in Northwestern Tanzania’s Lake Victoria Gold Fields, some 120 kilometers from Mwanza City and 20 kilometers southeast of Lake Victoria’s closest point. Only five kilometers west of the rapidly expanding town of Geita, the company’s main headquarters and operations are located there. A supporting office is located in Dar es Salaam. Goal of the position:

In addition to providing general but prompt, efficient, and professional legal advice in matters pertaining to labor and industrial relations, the environment, land take and acquisition, community relations, compliance matters, human rights issues, contract drafting and review, as well as any matter affecting or which may potentially affect the business and which may require legal intervention or attention, the successful candidate will be responsible for handling the legal and regulatory affairs of Geita Gold Mining Limited from its site.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A law student who recently graduated from university. A master’s degree could be beneficial in addition.
  • A professional attorney in Tanzania with at least ten years of experience, registered as an advocate with the High Court of Tanzania and its subordinate courts.SKILLS:
  • Ten years or more of expertise in general legal matters, mining law, corporate law, or natural resources law.
  • A track record of success in civil litigation and criminal defense or prosecution.
  • It is necessary to be knowledgeable about Tanzanian legal practice, including its procedures and guiding concepts.
  • It is necessary to be knowledgeable about corporate, administrative, environmental, mining, litigation, and policy making laws.
  • An additional benefit is prior experience in the mining or extractive industries.

PRIMARY OR ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Court cases.

  • Make an appearance for the Company on behalf of the Company in any court or quasi-judicial body, including regulatory authorities, in the prosecution or defense of the Company and its resources.
  • Maintain accurate case reports and records as well as active, proactive, and efficient management of all legal concerns pertaining to the business.
  • Assist Senior Legal Counsel in developing a successful conflict management, prevention, and resolution plan.
  • Advise and include site management in all litigation decision-making processes as instructed by Senior Legal Counsel.
  • Write the required letters and documentation.
  • Communicate with outside counsel who is representing or managing affairs for the company, in consultation with the company secretary or senior legal counsel.

Labor relations and employment:

  • Provide direction, training, or any related services as requested by the line manager and other senior managers on labor compliance issues and advise the department on general legal aspects of labor, industrial relations, and other business-related matters in consultation with the human resources department.
  • Offer guidance on pertinent labor, environmental, mining, and company standards, policies, and procedures.

Compliance and Regulation.

  • Attend to GGM’s operational regulatory and compliance needs both in advance of and as they arise.
  • Keep track of and document changes in legislation and the law that influence or could have an impact on the business’s operations.
  • Assist in overseeing and supporting matters pertaining to licenses and permits, as well as making sure that statutory reports are submitted to the appropriate regulatory organizations on time.
  • Prepare, update, and notify people about site management compliance issues on a regular basis.
  • Create or evaluate company rules, agreements, or other papers to make sure that the company’s rights, privileges, and entitlements arising from any legal action, agreement, or interaction with third parties are safeguarded and, if violated, enforced.
  • Examine and identify any risks that may arise from environmental management that could have a negative effect on the business or expose it to legal issues or responsibility.
  • Attend meetings with relevant parties like OSHA, MEM, and local government upon request from Senior Legal Counsel.

Matters General.

  • Help the Managing Director and Senior Legal Counsel with any legal matters as needed or as requested from time to time.
  • Help with all corporate and company secretarial matters for the senior legal counsel and company secretary.
  • As directed by the Senior Legal Counsel, represent the Company in all communications with third parties and take part in the growth, tenacity, and preservation of the Company’s interests.
  • Manage ad hoc assignments pertaining to business matters as requested on-site by any Senior Management of the Company.

FURTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Excellent problem-solving abilities, a customer-focused mindset, strong interpersonal skills, and analytical and organizational abilities.
  • Competent in the evaluation and interpretation of legal instruments, papers, and policies that either currently affect or may affect the company’s operations.
  • Strong organizing and planning abilities.
  • Strong leadership and analytical abilities.
  • Strong command of Swahili and English, both written and spoken.
  • Capacity to perform alone, with little supervision, under pressure, and on schedule.
