The Job Summary:

The Legal Officer is in charge of assuring legal compliance, risk management, and legal protection for business activities. The role is crucial in providing legal assistance, handling regulatory matters, and managing legal contracts to promote safe, responsible, and compliant corporate operations.

 

The key responsibilities:

Legal compliance.

  • Make sure that mining operations follow all applicable local, state, and international rules, regulations, and licenses.
  • Keep up to date on changes in mining-related legislation and regulations, and inform the organisation accordingly.
  • To interpret rules and regulations that apply to the organization’s activity and advise on compliance requirements.
  • Create and implement compliance rules and procedures to ensure legal compliance.
  • To certify and testify to legal documents on behalf of the company.

 

 

The Contract management.

  • To draft, examine, and negotiate a variety of mining-related contracts, such as exploration agreements, lease agreements, and supplier contracts.
  • Make sure that contracts are legally binding, safeguard the organization’s interests, and adhere to applicable laws.
  • To ensure compliance with business legal and legislative obligations for ongoing business operations.
  • Protect the organisation’s intellectual property rights, which include trademarks, patents, and copyrights.
  • Provide advice on intellectual property issues and assist in submitting applications for protection.

 

Litigation and Dispute Resolution.

  • To oversee the company’s representation in legal proceedings, such as litigation, arbitration, and mediation, when issues occur.
  • To collaborate with external legal counsel as needed and successfully resolve legal problems.

 

 

Permits and Licenses.

  • Provides an assistance in obtaining and renewing mining-related permits and licenses.
  • To monitor and maintain compliance with permit conditions and reporting obligations.

The Health and Safety Compliance.

  • Provide guidance on health and safety rules and compliance to protect the safety of personnel and mining operations.
  • To assist in resolving legal difficulties concerning workplace safety.

 

The Risk management.

  • To identify legal hazards linked with mining operations and devise measures to mitigate them.
  • Collaborate with other departments to execute risk mitigation measures.

 

The Contract Dispute Resolution.

  • To handle contractual issues, including those involving suppliers, contractors, and other stakeholders.
  • To negotiate and seek a conclusion that protects the organisation’s interests.

 

 

The Ethics and Corporate Governance.

  • Make sure that the organisation’s actions and policies adhere to ethical standards and corporate governance concepts.
  • Create and implement compliance initiatives and policies.
  • To ensure adherence to corporate governance norms and practices.
  • To assist with the organisation and preparation of board meeting materials, as well as the maintenance of business records.

 

The Capacity Building.

  • To provide legal training and instruction to employees and management on current legal issues and compliance requirements.
  • To keep the organisation informed of any legal developments that may affect its activities.

Carry out (perform) any other related duties as given by your direct supervisor from time to time.

 

The key Qualifications:

Academic and professional qualifications.

  • A bachelor’s degree in law (LLB) is preferred.

 

 

The Technical skills (competencies).

  • A thorough awareness of mining laws, environmental regulations, and health and safety standards.
  • Understanding of mining-related legislation and regulations at the local and international levels.
  • A proficient in legal research.

 

The Behavioral competencies.

  • Excellent negotiation and persuasive skills.
  • The excellent communication abilities.
  • The strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.

 

 

Experience.

  • A minimum of at least three years of legal experience, ideally in the mining or natural resource industries.

 

The Professional qualifications.

  • The admittance to the bar association or licensing authority for the practice of law as a registered high court advocate.
