Overall goal of the position:
Under the direction of the Country Director, the Media Development Manager will expand and maintain Media Action Tanzania’s portfolio of capacity building initiatives, making sure that it continues to be strategically significant and meets the demands of the media industry and project deliverables. Building and maintaining relationships with current and potential broadcasters, local and national radio station partners, media-development / media-for-development partners, including CSOs, NGOs, and social enterprises, and pertinent government agencies, like the TCRA, will be the responsibility of the Media Development Manager.
The Media Development Manager, who is a part of the Senior Management Team (SMT), will collaborate closely with the Country Director to promote business development, interact with the global organization, and enhance our external brand, all while contributing to the organization’s overall strategic direction.
Principal responsibilities and duties:
- Oversee the BBC Media Action’s portfolio for media
- development in Tanzania, including collaborations with the press, civil society, and other pertinent parties.
- Create and put into action a comprehensive partnerships plan that considers the requirements of the project, production, and capacity-strengthening teams.
- Assist mentors and trainers in providing creative and effective media development interventions that satisfy the demands of a dynamic media landscape, a range of media partners, and project and donor specifications.
- Uphold current connections and forge new ones with government agencies, NGOs, CSOs, broadcast and media partners, development partners, and social entrepreneurs who have an interest in seeing Tanzania’s media and/or media-for-development sector flourish. When applicable, coordinate BBC Media Action’s efforts with these parties to guarantee the industry’s efficacy and efficiency.
- Keep an eye on and predict trends in the media landscape, and advise the organization appropriately on how to adjust to emerging trends while maintaining efficacy and relevance.
- Provide SMT with regular updates on new developments in the fields of media, communication, and development partnerships. You should also offer strategic direction for Tanzania in this regard.
- Oversee the senior members of the team responsible for enhancing capacity, and collaborate with all mentors to devise and execute a plan for Media Action’s capacity-building initiatives in Tanzania.
- Handle the funds for partnerships and capacity building in accordance with organizational guidelines and donor specifications.
- Make that the organization’s partnerships and capacity-building initiatives adequately incorporate safeguarding, child protection, and other pertinent policies.
- Recognize and abide by the staff code of conduct, the protection policy of BBC Media Action, and the financial policies, particularly those pertaining to retirement and fraud.
- Take part in pertinent, required training on respect and safety at work.
- Any concerns about safeguarding should be reported right away, either through the Whistleblowing Policy or to the Country Director.
- Carry out any additional tasks that could be given.
Necessary expertise, understanding, and background:
- A master’s degree in social science or a closely related discipline, or its equivalent.
- A track record of building reliable and productive working relationships with editors, government employees, NGOs, and management of media houses.
- A track record of success in collaborating with the media and communications to accomplish development objectives, with an emphasis on enhancing capacity and producing content, as well as an awareness of formative, audience, and impact research.
- A track record of success as a senior manager in development settings, ideally in Tanzania and in the media or CSO sectors.
- A minimum of four years’ experience leading teams directly.
- Excellent financial management abilities, having a track record of overseeing annual budgets exceeding £250,000 and providing funders with accurate and timely financial reports.
- Demonstrated capacity to work independently and efficiently manage time under a variety of competing deadlines.
- Demonstrated capacity to balance a demanding workload and conflicting priorities while adhering to a predetermined plan.
- Extremely effective communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Excellent English and Kiswahili both written and spoken.
Desired abilities, know-how, and background:
- Familiarity with national and international current events.
- Familiarity with and practical use of editorial norms.
- Experience working in the development of resilience, health, governance, and humanitarian aid, among other areas.
- Current connections to pertinent Tanzanian government agencies and media-development and/or media-for-development organizations.
- Expertise collaborating with or operating inside networks of organizations.
