Bank of Tanzania
Established under the Bank of Tanzania Act of 1965, the Bank of Tanzania is the central bank of the United Republic of Tanzania. It started operations on June 14, 1966. The Bank of Tanzania Acts of 1978 and 1995, as well as the current governing legislation, the Bank of Tanzania Act of 2006, are the results of multiple changes to the enabling legislation.
The two periods of Tanzania’s monetary history before the Bank of Tanzania was established are the time before the East African Currency Board (EACB) was established in December 1919 and the time after that until the Bank of Tanzania was established in June 1966.
