The organization was created in 1989 and registered under the Societies Act of 1990. The group complies with the NGOs Act of 2002, despite obtaining NGOs status in 2019. The organization’s goals and objectives are to advocate for gender equality and promote human dignity and gender justice through policy, community action, media involvement, and legal and institutional reform.
To that aim, TAWLA envisions a society that values, upholds, and strengthens duties while also empowering women. Its mission is to work with relevant stakeholders to create a favorable legal and policy environment by providing diverse platforms for sectoral reform and ensuring access to justice through legal aid services, advocacy, awareness raising, strategic litigation, and research and publications on issues affecting women and children.
Concern ((about) the project:
The majority of Tanzanian women and children face violence on a daily basis. Given its broad prevalence, combating violence against women and girls should be a top development priority. In Tanzania, violence against women and children impedes the country’s capacity to fulfill its full economic potential, diverting resources away from optimal utilization and undermining the country’s efforts to achieve Sustainable Development.
The Goals (SDGs) 2030, African Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want, Tanzania.
The Development Vision 2025, Tanzania Youth Development Policy 2007, National Strategy for Youth Participation in Agriculture 2016-2021, and Country Development.
Cooperation strategy (CDCS). Addressing these important difficulties is necessary.
The TAWLA is implementing the project titled “Increasing Sustainable Access to Justice for Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Survivors at Bombo Hospital One Stop Center.” Under this project, GBV survivors at Bombo Regional Hospital’s one-stop center will receive comprehensive legal support, including legal consultation, court representation, and document preparation. This initiative necessitates considerable outreach to ensure that survivors are fully educated about the legal protections and social options available to them.
Overview of the job:
To increase access to justice for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) by establishing a legal aid desk at Bombo Regional Hospital One Stop Center (OSC) in Tanga.
The key responsibilities:
- To enhance the Bombo Regional Hospital OSC’s ability to provide quality and comprehensive services to GBV victims and survivors.
- To improve the coordination and referral system between the Center, TAWLA, and other stakeholders.
- To increase GBV victims’ and survivors’ access to justice by coordinating legal support at the center.
- Make sure that the organization’s mission, programs, goods, and services are regularly presented in a strong, positive light to important stakeholders.
- To supervise legal counsel for clients.
- To provide technical assistance with the production of pleadings, proof of evidence, and legal briefs.
- To undertake organization-related programs and projects.
- To supervise and offer technical help throughout legal research as needed.
- To coordinate and record all cases/matters handled by the OSC in the region.
- To compile the Legal Aid roster, contact members in court, and update headquarters on the situation.
- Create weekly reports for the organization.
- To educate and train community leaders, law enforcement officers, local government officials, religious leaders, community members, and women about human rights and gender-based violence.
- To undertake any other necessary duties as assigned from time to time.
JOB DURATION & TIMELINE:
- The legal assistance work is intended to be completed within 12 months after signing the contract.
Job qualifications and requirements:
Legal Officer should possess the following qualifications:
- A law degree (LLB) from a recognized institution.
- The Bar Association requires a current practicing license.
- A minimum of (at least) 3+ (three) years of legal experience, preferably in gender-based violence, human rights, or family law.
- The sound understanding of the legal structure and procedures.
- The excellent mastery of English (verbal and written communication).
- Previous experience working with trauma survivors or vulnerable communities is highly desirable.
- To demonstrated ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams, including health, social work, and law enforcement experts.
- Excellent lobbying, bargaining, and representation skills.
