The Possibility:

In order to support an evaluation of institutional roles, responsibilities, and capacity for supportive supervision of community health workers (CHWs) in Tanzania, Abt Global is looking for a research assistant (RA)/data collector. This evaluation is carried out as part of the Local Health System Sustainability Project (LHSS), which is sponsored by USAID, as part of the CHW Career Progression Activity. In order to facilitate access to universal health coverage, LHSS seeks to assist low- and middle-income nations in their transition to self-sufficient, sustainable health systems. Under the direction of Abt Associates, the six-year project collaborates with local stakeholders and partner nations to lower financial barriers to care and treatment, guarantee universal access to basic health services, and raise the standard of healthcare.

Under the supervision of the activity leads, you will be in charge of gathering, transcribing, and cleaning data from two councils as a RA/data collector. In addition to focusing on current capacity, obstacles, and innovations, the data collection will also address local CHW supervisory responsibilities, procedures, and structures. It will target CHWs, medical facilities, and local government officials. Through a consultation process, the assessment seeks to offer a paradigm for CHW oversight.

It is predicted that this part-time role will start in July 2024 and run through August 2024. The regions of Tabora and Urambo are putting the assessment into practice. Locals in this area are strongly encouraged to apply, especially women. For this position, up to two RAs/data collectors may be hired, depending on applications and availability.

Fundamental Duties:

  • Take part in training on data collecting.
  • Examine and comprehend the data gathering methods and assessment process.
  • Gather information both locally and within the facility.
  • Take detailed interview notes with a digital audio recorder.
  • Take a listen to and write down the interview audio.
  • Examine, confirm, and adjust the transcriptions as needed.
  • Using standard reporting formats, provide the activity leads regular updates on the status of the data gathering.
  • Preserve the privacy of the data that was gathered.
  • In order to resolve any issues that may come up, keep in regular contact with the activity leads.
  • Execute tasks in compliance with the protocols for assessment.
  • When carrying out your responsibilities, keeping professional secrets, and ensuring the privacy and confidentiality of the data you have access to, keep ethical considerations in mind.
  • Carry out additional tasks relevant to your employment as asked.
  • Provide a daily report on the tasks completed and the advancements made.

Our Core Values:

  • A degree in one of the biological or social sciences (biology, medicine, psychology, anthropology, sociology, and so on).
  • A minimum of one year’s experience gathering and analyzing data using mixed, qualitative, or quantitative methodologies.
  • Familiarity leading focus groups and in-depth interviews.
  • Requires fluency in Swahili.
  • It is desirable if you have prior experience working in policy research or public health.
  • It is very desirable to have prior experience with and/or knowledge of Tanzania’s community health landscape.
  • Capacity to function effectively in a cooperative group setting.
  • Strong familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.
  • It is preferred if you have prior experience gathering data using the Open Data Kit (ODK) program.
