The Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI) is an important organization for wildlife conservation in Tanzania. Here’s a breakdown of important information: TAWIRI is responsible for conducting and coordinating wildlife research throughout Tanzania. It provides scientific data and information to support wildlife management and conservation efforts. It’s a parastatal organization under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism. It was established by an Act of Parliament in 1980, initially as the “Serengeti Wildlife Research Institute” (SWRI), and its name was changed to TAWIRI in 1999 to reflect its broader national mandate. Its headquarters are located in Njiro Hill, Arusha.
The duties and responsibilities:
- To gather, process, and analyze data about wildlife management.
- To work and interact with research scientists on the dissemination and application of research findings as needed.
- To collect/ gather relevant literature and prepare research reports.
- To support in acquiring relevant disease monitoring data and preparing reports.
- To develop techniques for immobilizing and managing wildlife in order to investigate diseases and rescue snared animals.
- Create a research proposal for fundraising.
- To publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals or publishers.
- To undertake any other related duties as given by the immediate supervisor.
The Qualifications and Experience:
- A holder of a Master’s Degree and a Bachelor’s Degree in Wildlife Management or Wildlife Science and Conservation from a recognized institution, with at least an Upper Second Class undergraduate degree.
