The Institute’s focus on research, training, and services has expanded to include biomedical and ecological sciences, intervention studies, health-systems research, service delivery, and policy translation.
The Position Summary
The Ifakara Health Institute is seeking a Research Officer to join the Malaria Atlas Project (MAP) Dar es Salaam Node. The RO will help core researchers improve their data science capabilities by developing analytical models, preparing input data, deploying workflows, and disseminating results. This includes writing reports, papers, posters, and engaging with collaborators. In addition to their supporting roles, the ROs are required to lead, create, and implement minor projects with deliverables that contribute to the overall purpose and scope of the MAP project.
The duties and responsibilities:
- Conduct and support literature reviews, data searches, and data extraction, including the extraction of metrics required for modeling work from published literature and official reports.
- Obtain, organize, and perform preliminary processing and analysis on a wide range of datasets.
- Use applications such as Excel, ArcGIS/QGIS, STATA, R, Python, and others to inspect, manipulate, analyze, and process data, as well as to create graphs, reports, maps, and other result visualizations.
- Choose, follow, and customize data extraction and modification techniques.
- To promote best practices in data use and analytics by sharing responsibility for general IT housekeeping, backup maintenance, protocol documentation, data processing procedures, and procedure reviews.
- To take reasonable precautions to ensure your own safety and health, and avoid endangering the safety and health of others through any act or omission at work.
- To identify and assess workplace dangers, and implement hazard controls.
- To report all workplace injuries, illnesses, and near misses, no matter how minor they appear.
- Adhere to institutional policies and procedures.
Qualifications and Experience :
- The minimum prerequisite is a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject area, such as statistics, mathematics, data/computer science/engineering, or a similar quantitative discipline.
- Excellent computer, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- This work requires experience managing, analyzing, interpreting, wrangling, and manipulating data utilizing a range of software platforms, as well as proficiency with R software.
- The excellent numeracy skills as indicated by your experience and/or education, including the ability to employ numerical analytic methodologies and execute computations.
- The ability to communicate in English (both verbally and in writing).
- To demonstrate capacity to pay attention to details and self-reflect on outputs.
- A proven project and time management skills.
- To demonstrate ability to operate effectively in a multidisciplinary team with minimal supervision.
The Skills and competencies:
- Understanding the epidemiology of vector-borne diseases such as malaria, as well as other infectious diseases, is important for public health.
- The experience with spatial data and geometry files using GIS tools.
- Capability and experience in R-studio code writing, package development, and dashboard creation.
- The interest in advancing one’s career, such as pursuing an MSc or PhD in advanced modeling.
- The experience in developing and/or delivering training to various audiences.
- Understanding (knowledge) of other languages such as Swahili, French, Spanish, and Portuguese.
- Must adhere to IHI’s basic values.
