Overview of the Institute:
The Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is Africa’s foremost research organization, having a track record of inventing, testing, and verifying health-related technologies. The Institute’s focus on research, training, and services has expanded to include biomedical and ecological sciences, intervention studies, health-systems research, service delivery, and policy translation.
The Position Summary:
The Ifakara Health Institute is looking for a Research Officer or Research Scientist to join the team as an intern and mentee to the Malaria Atlas Project (MAP) Dar es Salaam Node, an African-based regional office for MAP responding to the growing demand for country-specific subnational risk mapping analyses, the need to bolster the technical support provided to national programs, and enhancing leadership, R&D in advanced modelling and analytical capacity for endemic-country
MoDD Africa expands on MAP’s malaria modeling by analyzing environmental, vector, and health system interactions.
The role will be for at least three months, with the possibility of being extended depending on performance and project requirements. The chosen candidate will be stationed in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, or one of our African partner institutions.
The duties and responsibilities:
The intern and mentee will carry out the following duties:-
- To practice dissemination and research skills and capacities while actively responding to queries from malaria control programs (NMPs) and other stakeholders in Africa’s endemic areas.
- To enhance their analytical and programming skills.
- To perform data collection and extraction.
- To perform data management and visualization.
- To have the opportunity to plan and implement mini initiatives with time-bound deliverables that contribute to the overall goal and scope of both projects.
- Adhere to institutional policies and procedures.
The Qualifications and Experience:
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant topic, such as statistics, mathematics, data science, or a related quantitative study.
- The knowledge of public health, disease epidemiology, vector-borne diseases, and ecology is advantageous.
The skills and competencies:
- Proficient in data analysis tools like R, Python, and QGIS, as well as dashboard development and machine learning, with a desire to learn more.
- The ability to pay attention to details, self-reflect, and manage time effectively.
- The Multilingual: English, Swahili, French, and Portuguese.
- Must adhere to IHI’s basic values.
